History of Vienna Airport (VIE)
Initially used as a military airfield in the town of Schwechat, southeast of the Austrian capital, Vienna Airport was built in 1938. In 1945, occupying British troops took over the facility, using the airport together with the French for several years before handing it over to the Austrian Handling Unit – later the Vienna Airport Authority – in 1953. Extensive reconstruction work was undertaken to convert the former military airfield into a civil airport. Upon completion of the work in 1977, flight operation at Aspern Airport was discontinued and Vienna Schwechat took over the former’s role as Austria’s most important flight hub.
In the following years, VIE Airport continued to expand, with additions including several hall extensions, additional car parks, ramps, the airport train station, and four terminals. Between 2004 and 2005, a new, separate VIP terminal was built, offering discrete and exclusive service to VIPs and visiting dignitaries, many of whom travel by private jet to Vienna. In 2016, Vienna Airport set a new record with 23.4 million arriving or departing passengers.
