History of Baku Airport
As early as 1933, there was an airfield with a passenger terminal in Baku. Over the ensuing decades, further terminals were added and Baku Airport’s original buildings were replaced by newer facilities. Terminal 2, which is now reserved for domestic flights, was built in 1989. Ten years later, the Azerbaijani government built an international terminal. In 2004, the airport, which had previously been named after the nearby village of Bina, was renamed Baku Heydar Aliyev Airport in honour of the late former president.
In 2010, Baku Airport’s operator decided to replace all of the Soviet era buildings with newer more modern designs. According to plans by Istanbul architect Autoban a modern building complex was created in 2014, whose curved glass constructions are regarded as an architectural marvel. With an area of 65,000 square metres spread over four floors, the new international terminal is designed for and equipped with a capacity of 6 million passengers per year. Additionally, the airport has two freight terminals, one of which was renovated and expanded in 2005. The two freight terminals provide excellent infrastructure for cargo flights in the region and bear witness to Baku’s long history as a hub of important trade routes between East and West. In December 2015, a new control tower with a modern radar system was added. In the same year, Skytrax, the British air industry consultancy firm, awarded four of a possible five stars to Baku Airport.
