Clermont-Ferrand Airport History
About 6 kilometres east of Clermont-Ferrand, the first airfield was built in the Aulnat commune in 1916 under the name Aérodrome d'Aulnat, boasting Europe’s first paved runway. For the next few years, the Auvergne’s Clermont-Ferrand Airport principally served as the corporate airport for tyre manufacturer Michelin as well as a site for military training. The first commercial flights commenced in 1929 to Geneva, Lyon, and Bordeaux. In the 1930s, it was increasingly used by the French Air Force with a military aircraft maintenance facility added in 1939.
Clermont-Ferrand Airport was under German occupation from 1940 to 1942. Following the end of the Second World War, the French Air Force resumed flight training at the facility. Civilian flights in 1961 first included regular connections to Paris and Nice. A new terminal was built in 1973; it was subsequently modernised in 1992 and 2000. The airport has been jointly owned by the Auvergne regional council, the city of Clermont-Ferrand, and the general council of Puy-de-Dôme since 2008, with the operation of the airport coming under the auspices of a consortium of the Vinci and Keolis Airports. Today, Clermont-Ferrand Airport welcomes almost 400,000 passengers on more than 8,600 arriving or departing flights annually.

When you organise private plane hire to Clermont-Ferrand and the Auvergne, you’ll arrive in a city surrounded by volcanos, with Clermont-Ferrand’s county of Puy de Dôme named for the largest of these. Some of the local buildings are even made with volcanic rock, the most famous of which is the double-spired Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, also known as Clermont-Ferrand Cathedral or the "black cathedral" for its black lava stone. A short walk from there is the Romanesque Basilica of Notre-Dame du Port, which is also partly built from this material as are several of the city’s landmarks.
As one of France’s oldest cities, Clermont-Ferrand’s cultural scene is well-established and yet continually innovating.
