In that first decade, however, the airport was a small airfield called Fréjorgues, which was first put into operation in 1938 and was built for military use exclusively. After the war, the airport returned to civilian use and, in 1946, a terminal for civil aviation was added. In 1964, the military officially gave the airport to the CCIM (Chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Montpellier), which remains in charge.

In the following decades, international air traffic increased significantly, to the benefit of Montpellier Airport. In 1990, the annual number of passengers exceeded the million mark for the first time. In the same year, a new, larger terminal was opened, which replaced the old terminal.
