Book Charter Flights to Rotterdam Airport with JetApp

Rotterdam The Hague Airport is located around five kilometres northwest of the city of Rotterdam. After Amsterdam Schiphol and Eindhoven, Rotterdam is the third-largest airport in the Netherlands; more than 1.6 million passengers visited the airport in 2016. With its wide range of exclusive facilities and proximity to a number of important international and European organisations, Rotterdam Airport is an excellent destination for a charter flight.

The History of Rotterdam Airport

The airport in Rotterdam was opened as early as the 1920s. However, Rotterdam The Hague Airport itself did not yet exist; the original airfield was called Waalhaven. The airport was opened only two months after Schiphol in 1920. Airlines such as KLM, which was then in its early stages, used the airfield regularly. However, the success of Waalhaven did not last long and the airport was quickly supplanted by Rotterdam Airport, as it soon became clear that a larger airport closer to the city was needed.

Eventually, Waalhaven airfield was destroyed in the course of World War II. After the end of the war, however, it was not possible to rebuild a new airport at the same location. The long-held plans for a new airport in the north of Rotterdam came to fruition, but approval for the construction of Rotterdam Airport in the Zestienhoven district was only given in 1955. Once construction began, the new airport was completed in just 14 months. Not long after, the major European airlines such as Lufthansa, Air France and Swissair began to offer flights to Rotterdam. After a new terminal was opened in 1971, Rotterdam Airport served a record 500,000 passengers in the same year.

Over the years, Rotterdam Airport has grown steadily and today it is the most important aviation hub in the Netherlands after Schiphol and Eindhoven. Rotterdam also plays an important role in Europe-wide air travel, in particular for charter flights around the continent.

As Rotterdam Airport is so close to the city and the centres of Dutch government, it often functions as a government airport, particularly since the closure of "Valenburg Naval Air Base" in 2005. Important international guests of the Dutch government always come to Rotterdam The Hague.
